Is it right for my employer to do this?

My boss has made some changes in our policies at work, and I don’t exactly agree with them. I work in a hotel and we do, on ocassion get a cash paying guest. When this happens my boss wants me to get a $ 50 cash deposit, or if they “look” a certain way, or have a local address to get a $ 100 cash deposit. Guests are getting MAD b/c “other” hotels don’t ask for this. Then there are other things: I am suppossed to quote the guest the special event rate for their hotel room (which is 10-15 % more than the standard hotel rate) Then if they ask for a discount AAA/AARP/ Military etc then I quote them the standard rate. I feel that practice is dishonest.
Another new policy, If a guest damages property or steals something….. it comes out of our paycheck if the guest doesn’t pay for it. Or if i discount a room w/o authorization, it comes out of my paycheck.

lorijotx:That is why you swipe their Visa card at check in. They can clear out in the morning with cash but if there are damages, you then have a means of getting paid for it.

Time to file a complaint with who ever oversees your franchise as he can’t touch your paycheck because of a guest. He is also profiling – can’t do that either. He needs to be canned. I sure hope this isn’t a tiny ‘mom & pop’ place and that this guy reports to someone else. Contact the district manager.

jeligula:No, it is not right. In fact, it’s downright dishonest. How are you to control the actions of the guest or even know when they scotched something from the room? It’s impossible. Find another job, if at all possible.

Regarding honesty , welcome to the skanky world of business .
Mostly you need to job hop until you find an honorable operation .

Regarding deductions from your check , each state labor board has different rules and most of those you listed are illegal in many states .
You need to contact Your state labor board for the rules that apply where you are .

Forget right , what counts is legal ? or illegal ?
Many business have no ethics really . . .
