Drew:The best way to get good prices is to plan your trip during the right time frame. If you plan on going any time after May, you are going to be paying a summer premium that doesn’t decrease until after Labor Day. The week after Labor Day is one of the best to travel since the weather is still great but no one is traveling and so hotel rates go way down. If you don’t want to wait that long the last week in April to the first week of May is about as cheap as it is going to get.
If you are on a budget, you definitely want to book a hotel near Seaworld since La Jolla is quite a bit more expensive. You can always go through the third party internet sites like Hotwire and Priceline and usually come away with substantial discounts, but be prepared to be given the least desireable room type. A good way to work the system though is to book a 3* hotel for a good rate and then call the hotel directly and ask about paying for an upgrade. Hotels hate the low rates they are forced to take and always welcome the opportunity to squeeze a little more revenue out of the situation.
If you need to fly to SD, Travelocity and Expedia offer good package rates which include Hotel + Airfare.
There is not specifically any one place that you can get discounts on all hotels in the area however San Diego Concierge keeps a comprehensive list of the prices for all hotels and is sometimes given room to work in discounts.

Sophia:The Hotel Circle area of San Diego has a lot of value-priced lodging options. Also, you can try sites like hotwire.com where you get inexpensive prices, though you do have to be flexible on where you stay. Also, if you are a AAA member, you can get some discounts too.

2. Go to the websites of these hotels and see if they are having any online specials. Compare the rates with those available at the online booking site.
3. Call the hotel directly. Let the reservation agent know about any discounts that you qualify for such as AAA, Entertainment Card, government or military discount. (If you work for a city, county, state, or government agency, a copy of your pay stub will usually qualify you for the government rates. I have found that Hyatts and Hiltons often have special rates that make them less expensive than a budget hotel.)Ask them for the best rate they have available.
4. Make your budget hotel reservation online or on the telephone knowing that you are booking the best rate available.
