Great tool. Dewalt got this one RIGHT

So what is the big deal about a brushless motor (BL)? If you want to get more power out of your cordless drills then a lot. Instead of using contact brushed to transfer electric to the motor, a BL motor uses electronics. First, brushes by their nature create a small arc of electric from the brush to the motor (these are the sparks you see inside the tool if you turn out the lights). This method of electric transfer results in a loss of power, the visible manifestation is the spark and heat created by the tool. Less power loss means longer life for the batteries. No brushes mean, well, no brushes to wear out. Less heat means less thermal fatigue on the tool. In summary a BL motor delivers more toques per watt and should give the tool a longer service life.
Performance
We tested the new 20v max BL against a standard Dewalt driving screws in 2x12's. We then recharged the batteries and switched them between the tools. The result was almost identical. The Brushless tool. drove almost twice as many screws as the standard brush motor.
To me this means one very important thing; longer battery life. It's my understanding that every time you charge a battery it losses a little of its life. Therefore if you are charging the tool half as much I would expect the battery to last twice as long. That is money in my pocket.

Durability
My crew is tough on tools. The impact gut has been dropped, kicked, and dunked in a pool. To its credit all the abuse has not affected it at all.
Overall
We've been using this tool for about two month and have found it to be well balanced tool with a lot of guts. Being able to check the charge level on a battery before you install it has saved me a lot of up and down on the ladder. I'm not sure about the speed selector. It does not give a mechanical advantage of more torque at lower speeds as I would hope. Instead it simply limits the speed and toque which to me seems redundant with a variable speed trigger.
Overall a great tool I'm looking forward to pushing to its limits. Dewalt did good with this gun.
